Kathryn Deyell

Kathryn is a PhD candidate in ocean governance at the University of Tasmania in the Politics and International Relations Program. Kathryn’s research interests include managing conflict and building consensus in the use of ocean space (ocean diplomacy), the politics of ocean governance reform in a climate crisis, and law of the sea. Kathryn is a passionate sailor and combines her practice of sailing with a deep curiosity about imagination and alternative futures to produce projects for Hello Atoll with creative collaborators.

Among her many adventures, Kathryn has been a diplomat, strategist, international broker, policy wonk, negotiator, message crafter, narrative shaper, content curator and creative producer. She has worked in senior roles in foreign affairs and trade, and the creative industries, and has more than two decades of experience in the public and private sectors in Australia, Asia and North America. Highlights included leading public diplomacy teams in New York and New Delhi for the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and leading international market development in North America for Creative Australia.

Kathryn holds a BA(Hons) in international studies from the University of Adelaide and a Graduate Certificate in Law of the Sea from the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS) at the University of Wollongong.
