Jo Lloyd

About
Jo Lloyd is an influential Melbourne dance artist working with choreography as a social encounter, revealing behaviour over particular durations and circumstances.

A graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts, Jo has presented her work in gallery spaces and theatres in Japan, Hong Kong, Dance Massive, the Melbourne International Festival, the National Gallery of Australia, the Biennale of Sydney, Liveworks, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Museum of Contemporary Art and Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts.

Jo recently created the film and live work, Archive the Archive for the National Gallery of Australia’s exhibition KNOW MY NAME: Australian Women Artists 1900 to Now and was a commissioning artists for the 2020 Keir Choreographic Award. Her work OVERTURE presented at Arts House in 2018 and the Melbourne Festival 2019, received three Green Room Awards and a Helpmann Award nomination. In 2018 Jo created CUTOUT at ACCA, for the Melbourne International Festival, CUTOUT the film was presented as part of Tempo Festival NZ 2020.

Other major works include; DOUBLE DOUBLE with Deanne Butterworth, Tina Havelock Stevens and Evelyn Morris, presented at the Ian Potter Museum of Art, Liveworks and Mona Foma, LIVE JUNK (2018 and 2019), Garden Dance for the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, Confusion for Three (Arts House 2015 and PICA 2018), the award winning Mermermer, with Nicola Gunn for Chunky Move - Next Move 2016, FUTURE PERFECT for Dance Massive, 2013 and Apparently that's what happened, Arts House 2008.

Jo has been commissioned to make several works for companies Dancenorth;Communal Table, Brisbane Festival 2019, Tasdance for the Unconformity Festival, Queenstown, 2021 and an eight hour work for the NGV; Melbourne NOW 2014. Jo also created the choreography for Speak Percussion and Liza Lim's opera; Atlas of the Sky and Nicola Gunn's; Piece for Person and Ghetto Blaster, which won numerous awards and has toured world wide.

Jo has performed in the works of choreographers Shelley Lasica, Sandra Parker, Lucy Guerin and Gideon Obarzanek, she was a member of Chunky Move from 2003 to 2008, touring extensively throughout Australia and overseas. Jo has collaborated closely with visual artists; David Rosetzky, Sally Smart, Stephen Bram, Alicia Frankovich and Ranters Theatre and Back to Back Theatre.

Jo received two Asialink Residencies (Japan 2004-5), was the Dancehouse Housemate (2008), was Resident Director of Lucy Guerin Inc. (2016) and received a Creators Fund and an Australia Council Fellowship (2018). Jo teaches regularly for Lucy Guerin Inc., Chunky Move, the Victorian College of the Arts and has taught extensively in Australia and overseas for the Akram Khan Company, Jacobs Pillow, Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, Bangarra and Australian Dance Theatre. Jo has been a Resident Artist at The Substation since 2018.
