Safety Net

With all the characteristics of high end production, I certainly have not seen the likes of this quality of production in the community collaboration space before.

How should a show begin? Twenty-four young people, aged 12 to 17 gather in a room. They talk, they play, they move, they create, they question, they experiment, they collaborate and they devise a brand new contemporary performance work. Drawing on their own experiences as young people growing up in North Queensland, Safety Net interrogates the boundaries of safety and risk, control and freedom, rules and choices, and conforming and individuality. How do you discover your voice, your people and your place?
A first for Townsville, regional Queensland’s leading arts organisation Dancenorth led this brand new and unique community arts project that placed young Townsville artists centre stage as both creators and performers. Working in collaboration with professional artists from the Dancenorth Community Experience team, TheatreiNQ and Diffraction Collective to devise and present an original dance theatre work, the cast experienced the fullness of the creative process – inspirations, curiosities and challenges alike. This required physical and creative rigour, and a willingness to experiment, take risks, trust and be vulnerable. Along with the themes of the work itself, this experience developed imagination, openness and resilience in the young cast members.
